New Delhi : Special Staff South Distt has arrested 26 people, including 5 women at a call centre for allegedly impersonating Amazon customer service providers and duping US citizens.
TEAM :
A team led by Inspector Atul Tyagi raided the premises and found an office set-up in place. The employees were caught red-handed trying to dupe people on calls.
“ The people at the call centre were pretending to be employed by Amazon Inc and used illegal techniques like VOIP calling, bypassing the legal international long-distance gateways ,”
The accused were extorting Amazon customers based in USA by claiming their amazon ID had been hacked.
ENQUIRY :
On being asked about any license and authority to run the call centre,no documents could be produced.
MODUS OPERANDI :
Mobile phones were recovered from the possession accused persons, which contained various US mobiles numbers in a Whatsapp group.
The accused told police that they would send fake messages to phone numbers of Amazon customers,telling that their amazon ID has been hacked and charges has been imposed upon them. When the customer would call back to know more about it, the accused would show them fake repair of their amazon ID through Any Desk app.The target would be made to pay up in form of Target gift cards, which the accused would redeem.
RECOVERY :
29 Computer Systems,
3 Servers,
2 Internet switches,
2 Modems with other accessories being used by the employees and mobile phone containing details of duped transactions have been seized.
INVESTIGATION :
Further investigation is being carried out to unearth the whole gang of cheaters.
